The Philippines

The Philippines is a group of 7,107 islands that lie between the Pacific and Southeast Asian seas. While some parts of the country are highly industrialized, other parts are still completely undeveloped and house some of the worlds most endangered and unique wildlife.

Home to 100 million people, the Philippines is diverse in culture and history. Often referred to as some of the most hospitable people, Filipinos are also talented, resourceful, and very hard-working. The nation has its own share of difficulties ranging from poverty, oppression, and an onslaught of natural disasters. They are truly one of the most resilient peoples on earth.

BORACAY MISSIONARIES

Shores of Hope is led by missionaries Dan and Tori Beaver in partnership with First Love International Ministries. Twenty Five years ago, Dan and  Tori were sent out by GBIM (Grace Brethren International Missions) to serve as church planters and teach at Faith Academy in Cainta Rizal, Metro Manila. They helped plant the Grace Brethren Church in Pasig.  For many years, Dan was the Athletic Director at Faith Academy and Tori was also a teacher for 10 years at Brent International School.

In 2007, they began another journey of faith and service with a desire to reach the diversely populated island of Boracay and Aklan. Recognizing the need to help raise up local leaders that can continue to influence the community around them, they began building a Bible School and a K-6 school that has continued to grow steadily. Behind the busy tourism that feeds these islands, Dan & Tori saw impoverished and oppressed children lacking the physical, educational, and spiritural attention they desperately needed. Through feeding sites and medical clinics, they found a way into their hearts by caring for their needs and sharing the love of Christ.

It wasn't much longer until they found an opportunity to reach an entirely separate people group altogether. The Ati, one of the original indigenous people of the Philippines who are deeply discriminated, are slowly being forced off their homeland, given little opportunity to achieve a better future. By working with various tribe leaders, they began to pour life into their community by caring for their needs through feeding sites, medical missions, and providing a quality education.

The Ati People

The Ati people are a minority tribe living in poverty and isolation on the island of Panay in the Philippines.  They have dark skin and curly hair.  They are similar to the Aborigines living in Australia. Rejected by the majority of the population, four Ati clans live on a mountain side with no school, poor nutrition and health care.

Two years ago, we began to visit these clans three times a week; to feed the Ati mothers and children with nutritious food and establish a relationship with them.

From these visits a strong desire grew in our hearts to bring better education to the Ati children, so that they could be given opportunity.  Given hope for jobs and a better way of life it is our desire to stop the cycle of poverty with in their race.   As a result, we have already purchased land where the Ati live and have begun constructing the first school building for the Ati children, a powerful symbol of God’s love and hope for their future.

Do you have a willing heart and hands to come and help bring a short term team, to help with the construction of the school and orphanage?  A team could also come to help tutor and teach the Ati children.  If you can not come, could you help by purchasing construction materials?

Please contact us if you would like to know more about how you can help.

The Vision

K-6 School

School space and more teachers are needed to accommodate these children. With the new facility being built, we hope to see a strong functioning elementary and high school develop.

The premise to raise up Christian leaders out of poverty is:

  • So the Filipino can reach his own people in a greater way;
  • So the Filipino children can learn to function on an international level; so that they may go into the work force anywhere in the world in order to reach people for Christ in other nations.

Bible School

Started in Nov. 2010, this exists in order to empower and equip the Filipino with the Word of God to reach the Philippines, South East Asia and beyond.

Medical Outreaches

Reaching out in this way with compassion and love is a wonderful avenue to reach people with the Gospel. Meeting physical needs is an effective way of opening hearts and minds to accept the peace healing and comfort that only Christ can give.
